The development of hydroelectric generating facilities has the potential to impact fisheries. Spawning and nursery areas, metals in fish and migration patterns can be adversely affected by the diversion of water and installation of control weirs. Studies indicate that the existing fishery within the Namakan River is both vibrant and diverse, with species including lake sturgeon, walleye, northern pike, and small-mouth bass. OPEG is committed to not only maintaining but, where practicable and economically feasible, exploring opportunities for improving fish habitat within the study areas. These improvements may include the creation of new potential spawn and nursery habitat, velocity and elevation reductions, construction of fish migration structures, and on-going monitoring programs.
